- Online counseling generally refers to the provision of professional mental health services concerns via communication technology (Internet & phone). Often called e-therapy, etherapy, e-counseling, online therapy services are typically offered via phone, email, real-time chat, and video conferencing. Some clients use online counseling in conjunction with traditional psychotherapy, and others use it as an occasional check-in tool for their lives.
- Online Counseling includes three different services: live chat counseling, telephone counseling, and email counseling. These services are called "online" because they occur either on the internet or on the telephone. Customers can elect to participate in live chat sessions, live telephone sessions, or asynchronous email chat sessions.
- Online Counseling allows clients to access services from the comfort and convenience of your home, office, or other "virtual" location, rather than "in-person" or "face-to face" land-based office. It is especially appealing for individuals who are unable or unwilling to see a mental health professional in person. This service can be a useful introduction to counseling and can be followed by a migration to my land-based practice, or vice-versa. The key idea here is to maximize the options available for you to receive counseling services.
- Some people opt for counseling on an ongoing basis, while for others, a single session related to a specific problem. However, it is important to note that online counseling can be very helpful, but is not available for emergencies or crises.
